What is keeping one more student worth?

An illustrative estimate of the teaching revenue your institution keeps when more first-year students stay. Defaults come from published Australian Government data; change any of them to match your institution.

Australian evidence is limited and mixed. The only Australian randomised trial of SMS outreach we know of (Victorian TAFEs, 2018) found no effect on retention. A large US randomised trial of intensive coaching found 5 percentage points at six months (Bettinger and Baker, 2014). One percentage point is a conservative illustration, not a measured Retento result.

This is an illustrative estimate, not a forecast or guarantee. It uses national averages from published Australian Government data and assumptions you can change. Actual results depend on your students, your support services and how outreach is delivered.

How it’s calculated

Students retained = commencing students × improvement. Revenue kept = students retained × annual revenue per student × years of study kept. The improvement can’t exceed the attrition rate. Figures are teaching revenue only, before costs, and don’t include the value to students themselves.
